Wednesday: -$814.50
When I woke up this morning, I wasn't sure if my account would be still be working, but to my relief, all seems to be well as of now.

Unfortunately the same can not be said about my poker day. I lost a decent chunk of change, but reading Greenstein's book (Ace on the River) has been helping me a lot with the psychological aspect of my game. He writes about how winning players can handle bad beats and substantial losses, whereas losing players go right into "complain mode" saying how they are the unluckiest people in the world.

I'm not sure why, but that immediately made a light go off in my head that I should stop my bitching and whining when I am losing. Really, there's no point. As long as I am making profitable decisions, it really doesn't matter whether my opponent hits his 3-outer or not..

Reported for collusion

Tuesday: +$948
I played exactly 30 Sit n Gos with buy-ins of $100+9, $105+9, and $200+15. I am quite pleased with the final result, although there was a situation in my final SNG that threw me off a little.

Here's the situation: I was at the bubble of a $215 SNG and there was another player there from Germany who was chatting it up with me in German. I was responding in German, which is a big mistake because I just had to fight to get my chat back a few days ago. Anyway, that's not what the story is about.

To make a long story short, a hand came up where I had JJ and raised it 3x BB. The small stack immediately pushed and then this certain German player (big stack) re-pushed all in. There is no way in hell I was going to call this bet on the bubble. The problem is that as I am pressing the Fold button, he tells me he has QQ! Why would he do that? That put me in a really awkward situation. I knew I needed to fold, but now he's making it look like we are playing together. I folded, he won the hand and the guy who bubbled was PISSED. I can honestly understand him, even though he still would have bubbled had I called. He said that he reported us for collusion, which is really not cool for me. The last thing I want is to get my account red-flagged.

A very similar situation once happened to me (*hint hint* Seb) and needless to say I was incredibly ticked back then as well. Why would someone announce their hand in the chat box??? And why am I the one who looks like he is in on it??? Wow I'm getting mad just writing about it.

If any of you are in a hand with me, do me a favor and keep your cards to yourself! Thank you!

Down and back

Monday: -$202.80
I was down quite a bit of money for most of the day, but did a late night/early morning rally to minimize my losses. Too tired to write more.

Nice weekend

Saturday: +979

Sunday: +634.50

5 more days of June left, I'll need to go on a crazy run if I want to make this $6k goal happen. More days like these will certainly help.

Spielbank Berlin Tournament

32 players showed up to play the €400 + rebuys tournament at the Spielbank Berlin. It was a two-day event, but as fate would have it, I did not even make it to Day 2.

I was originally drawn to Table #4, but since the tables were unevenly balanced, I was relocated to Table #3. My table certainly had some interesting characters. Two players opted for the fully reflective sunglasses (interesting) but I really couldn't take either of them seriously. The play was up to par with online play at Bossmedia, meaning ridiculously poor. I knew that if I could catch some lucky breaks, this could definitely turn into something nice. Onto the game:

Starting chips: 4000
Blinds: 20/40

1st hand of the tournament I am dealt AK in MP. One limper in front of me, I raise to 200, everyone folds.

Approximately two orbits later I am dealt QQ in MP. The blinds have been doubled to 40/80 by this point. Two limpers in front of me, I raise it to 420. One of the limpers calls and we see a flop of K J 9. He immediately leads out for 200. This is one of the reflective glasses wearers who had been seeing a lot of flops. I did not regard him as a great player is what I am trying to say. Anyway, I raised to 600 in hopes to get some information on where I stand in the hand. He calls without hesitation. The turn comes down and it is a 6. He bets out 1k and after a few moments of thought I lay my queens down.

Fast forward two orbits later, blinds are now at 100/200. My stack is not in very healthy shape at only 2300 chips. I am in the BB and am dealt AJo. Both glasses wearers (we'll call them Phil Ivey I and II) limp, as they have been doing quite often. Since I still had two rebuys I could make, I opt to just push my chips in right off the bat. Phil Ivey I goes into Hollywood Mode and thinks for about a minute before calling me with none other than AA. He gets all giggly and happy go lucky as he rakes in the pot, I wanted to wipe that smile off his face so bad.

I rebought 2k chips for €200 and was small stacked again for a few minutes before the 30 minute break. The buffet during break was very tasty, I must say. I used my final rebuy and got 3k chips for another €200 (you got 3k chips instead of 2k if you rebought after the break) and so my stack was 4400 when play resumed.

The blinds were already at 200/400 now. The structure was much too fast, all players agreed on that. Spielbank Berlin is still learning how to run tournaments, so I got to give them credit for at least trying to put something playable together.

The blinds hit 300/600 and I had yet to play a hand after break. My stack was right around 3400 when the I posted the big blind. It was folded around to Phil Ivey I (happy go lucky no more), who had donked off all his chips in several hands. He went all in for 1800 something and I looked down at A2o. I had to pay 1200 to win 2700 against this guy, who had already pushed with 56o, 53o, and K7o. In my mind it was a clear call for me. To make a long story short, he had A5 and it was all looking like a chop. The flop came 366. The only cards that would not not split the hand were a 4 or 5. Of course the 4 came on the turn, the river was a K and he scooped the pot.

Now I was crippled but doubled up when my A3o met Phil Ivey I's QTo. Still shortstacked, I was on the button with K7s and 2800 in chips. Everyone folded to me and I pushed all in, only to get called with 99 from the SB. I failed to improve and was left with only 500 chips.

Ding ding ding! Blinds go up to 500/1k! I wait for the BB to hit me before declaring "ALLLLL IN," which got a few chuckles from around the table. I didn't look at my cards until it was time for showdown. Everyone folded so the SB was automatically in the pot with me. He showed J4o. I flipped my first card: A! My second card: K! AK baby! The flop comes down 4Q5, not exactly what I was looking for. Luckily an ace came on the turn! But wait, one more card! Just no Jack or Four, please! River: J! You gotta be kidding me. Oh well.

While talking to the Poker Manager after the tournament, I found out that the Deutsche Meisterschaften are being held in Berlin this year. Last year they were in Schenefeld. I would find a link but I'm too tired. Anyway, I begged him to add some new blind levels, he said they will definitely look into it. The Meisterschaften are in November and they are planning on having 10 full tables. I can't wait!

Some updates

Thursday: -$139
This was looking to be a lot worse, for most of the day I was down over 1k but managed to rally it up and reduce my losses to a minimal amount. It is said that great players win the most when they are ahead and lose the least when they are behind. I think this applies more to hands that are actually being played rather than general results, but I still think it is true. I am not saying I am a great player (matter of fact, I suck), but that is something I definitely strive to be.

I was woken up this morning by the DHL delivery guy, who had a pleasant surprise for me. Both Harrington on Hold'em III by Dan Harrington as well as Ace on the River by Barry Greenstein arrived in less than two weeks from the date they were ordered. Thank you Pokerstars FPP shop! I have begun reading Ace on the River already and I must say that it seems to be a great read!

Shortly afterwards, I got a phone call from Rainer, saying that there is a €400 + rebuy tournament being held at Spielbank Berlin on Friday. That was news to me! I called the casino to find out the details and was told that the starting chips are 4000 with 20/40 blind levels and that each player is allowed a maximum of two rebuys (each €200). The tournament is tomorrow, or I guess tonight since it is already Friday. They are expecting around 40 players.

Rainer also told me that while reading through the Poker-Tester Forum, he stumbled across the Petrovice thread. He told me he definitely wants to come with us, so that makes us 4 Berliners so far! We'll be there from the 28th-30th of July. I'm pretty sure we're going to have a great time, as well as make a few bucks here and there if possible.

Fast forward to August 17th. Sutti and I will be flying down to Vienna for a long weekend of poker and I couldn't be more excited about it. More details to follow...

Wednesday

Wednesday: +$446
Other than the fact that I kept losing my internet connection, today went fine. I didn't play much poker, though, only a few HU SNGs. I may put some time and effort into these, as I think there is a lot of money to be made there. We'll see. Other than that, I went and saw "The Sentinel" tonight and I can certainly recommend it.

Tomorrow is USA's big game, keep your fingers crossed!

Meltdown

Tuesday: -$1275
There goes my positive June. I highly doubt you want to read about all the negatives, so I'll just stick to the positives from today:

I went to the Germany-Ecuador game. Good times. That's it.

By the way, I'm steaming right now. It takes my every last bit of energy not to clutter this entry with many swear words, tales of bad beats, and general frustration. Good times and bad times, right? The only way is up!

Recovery

Monday: +$821
I had several ITMs today then had problems closing it out each and every time. I only won one SNG, all the other money comes from 2nd and 3rd place finishes. I played mostly at Stars (should even be PlatinumStar by tomorrow night) and only a little at CelebPoker.

I busted out of the Poker-Tester.com tourney in 11th place, when my flopped two pair could not hold up against a flush draw. We did have a record turnout of 33 players, though, which was very nice. Congratulations go out to Swordsman for taking it down!

I do have a hand history that I would like to share from a $100+9 SNG I played at CelebPoker tonight:

In case my color coding didn't confuse you to death, try taking another look at this hand. I can't believe these guys are real-money players, let alone play $109 SNGs. They both call my pot-sized preflop, postflop, and turn bets like it's a normal deal. Don't get me wrong here, I'm not complaining about the suckout. Matter of fact, I'm happy these guys play this way. I hope they tell their brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, aunts, and uncles about their (short term) winnings.

I used to give players the benefit of the doubt, but from now, at CelebPoker, you are a donkey until proven otherwise!

Not again please

Sunday: -$1340
I'm not sure if I can express my pure frustration in words alone. Yet another one of these days and once again I am so far off track it is unbelievable. Every single tourney I entered just went to shit, it is almost sickening.

Most all of my hope in winning the CelebPoker League is gone, as I am now more than 70 points behind the leader. Tonight I managed to get all my chips in postflop on a 235 board. I held 33, and my opponents held AKs and AA respectively. Well, as fate would have it, the one and only ace left in the deck came on the river, so instead of a double knockout, I was toast. The only reason I will continue to play that damn league is to get in the top 5 and get a CelebPoker chipset. I have invested so much time in it by now that it would be a shame to not get some sort of compensation.

Tonight was also the Pokerstars Blogger Championship. Over 2000 players showed up and after nearly 4 hours of play I came in 89th place, top 54 received prizes. Who would have thought?

Finally some progress

Friday: +$1154
This day put me back on track on my quest for $6k in June. I am around half way there and a few more days like these will certainly do the trick. I won another $215 SNG at CelebPoker, which contributed a great deal to today's result. I also took advantage of the Pokerstars Reload Bonus, and at the rate I am going I will have the bonus cleared in no time.

I had a nice run the in Celeb League tourney, making it to the final 4 before my AK was beat by A6. I was really going for the win, because I desperately need some points in that damn league. It is so frustrating for me to play that league, because I honestly feel that the competition is weaker than I am. I don't want to toot my own horn, but these guys are really not all that great. Sooooooo why can't I beat them? Am I not that great either? I guess only time will tell, I still have until September to show what I am made of.

Boring stuff

Thursday: +$92
I went to see the Sweden-Paraguay game tonight, which was very cool. The stadium was about 90% full of Swedes, 5% Paraguayans (???) and 5% Germans. That made for a very loud atmosphere, especially after the goal fell in the 89th minute.

I played 6 tournaments tonight and the result is hardly worth mentioning. I started off strong, then took some donkalicious beats, but hey, it happens! You can't win 'em all. Unfortunately.

The other side of standard

Wednesday: -$184.39
Since CelebPoker was down all day, I didn't play too much. When the software finally came back up, all they offered were cash games, where I lost a few bucks. I don't know why, but I just haven't been in the mood for poker as much lately. Maybe it's the World Cup, maybe it's the hear, I don't know.

Standard

Tuesday: +$542.06
Just a normal night of online poker, nothing exciting at all. I am well behind in my quest for $6k for the month but all it takes is one MTT success and I'm back in business!

3 points for the wrong team

I drove to Gelsenkirchen for the game, which USA lost 3-0. Obviously a huge disappointment, but I am confident that they will get their act together against Italy. I haven't been playing much poker these past few days, just haven't been in the right mood. Olli is coming over tonight for another "Zocker's Night," maybe that'll switch things up for me.

Summer playlist

Saturday: +$542
I wish I had something exciting to report, but unfortunately it's just the daily grind. I watched all the World Cup games and played poker, I guess I'm living the dream :)

By the way, here are some great summer songs to relax to while playing poker (these are all on my daily playlist):
Don Henley - Boys of Summer
Chicago - Make Me Smile
Dobie Gray - Drift Away
Joe Cocker - Summer in the City
Otis Redding - Sitting on the Dock of the Bay

There are plenty more, but these should give you a good start!

Headache

Friday: -$357
I didn't log many hours in today due to the World Cup kickoff, and then due to me feeling like crap later on. It's not surprising that playing while not feeling good is a combination destined for failure.

Running hot!

Thursday: +$1364
I played from 8pm-4am and am quite pleased with the result. I played only SNGs and continued to run well like yesterday. I didn't expect it to take such a short time to get myself out of the hole, these past two days have basically been me floating on Cloud Nine.

As a result, my June results are in the plus for the first time this month. Now it's my job to take those results and turn them into at least $6k by the end of June.

Thursday, June 08, 2006

What a day

Wednesday: +$3132.60
What comes after your biggest loss? Your biggest win? The poker gods are trying to give me a heart attack with the crazy swings. I played from 4pm-3am yesterday (11 hours) and it paid off completely. I was winning my good hands and sucking out with my bad ones. I won a numerous amount of SNGs (including two $215 SNGs and four $109 SNGs) which took care of the big sums. The rest came from the smaller SNGs, as well as random 2nd and 3rd place finishes.

I played one MTT, the $3k Guaranteed ($20+2) and cashed in that for a whopping $44 bucks. Other than that, the single table tournaments took care of my day and almost completely wiped away my June losses! Obviously I would like to just copy/paste everything that happened today and report the same results to you every day, but I'm afraid the chances of that are slim to none. Still, nothing says I can't continue a nice run, that is, unless the poker gods really are going for that heart attack...

P.S. Thanks to $adne$$, selecti, and picknicker for the kind words after yesterday's post!

Comical Relief

My blog from yesterday will be up later on. In the meantime, check out these funny commericals from Full Tilt Poker:
Phil Ivey's Poker Face (very funny)
Erik Seidel's Poker Face (also quite funny)
John Juanda's Poker Face (moderately funny)

They are all in Quicktime Format, but if you go to this page you can get them in mp4 or Windows Media formats as well. Enjoy!

Someone pull the emergency break

Tuesday: -$1509.90
What a killer month this is turning out to be. June is one week old and I am $3617.90 in the hole already. This means I have 23 days left to win over $9500 if I want to meet my goal of +$6k for the month of June.

I don't want to waste too many words on what is going on right now, but believe me, it's quite disgusting. Whether it be cash games, SNGs, or MTTs, the chips seem to be landing in my opponent's stacks rather than my own. I really need to refocus myself and grind out the damn money, because when I set a goal, I will give it my 100% all to accomplish it. I really don't care if that means 48 hour marathon sessions, I'm not going to give up. Any words of encouragement would be greatly appreciated!

Back on my feet

Monday: +$401.10
I sure hope that this is a sign of what's to come. I am not trying to win back the lost $2k from yesterday, because playing just to make up losses is leathal. I approach every day as a new day, and I am happy with today's end result.

Tomorrow's result will be even better, I feel it.

Sunday no funday

Sunday: -$2050.30
Let's start with the good news. I came in 3rd place in a $105+9 SNG at Pokerstars today for a $75 profit. Read that sentence a few times, because those are the only dollars I won today.

On to the bad news. Let's begin with the 11 other SNGs, with mixed buy-ins of $100+9, $105+9, and $200+15. They all have one thing in common: I finished out of the money.

The Bodog $100k Guaranteed ended for me after 2 and a half hours of playing, outside the money of course. Then there's the $109 MTT at CelebPoker, which I lost the very first hand of the tournament. AQ vs 22 on a AQ2xx board. Last place for me.

Surely the CelebPoker League must have gone better. Nope! 8th place for no money and an amount of points not even worth mentioning.

At 10:30pm both Million Dollar Guaranteed tournaments started, both at Pokerstars and PartyPoker, with buy-ins of $215 each. After 2 hours my PartyPoker experience was over (place 1800+ something of over 5000 players). After 3 hours and 8 minutes my Stars tournament ended as well (place 848 of 5000+ players). Top 750 got paid, so I guess I came close if that counts for anything.

Take all that frustration to the $3+.30 + Rebuys ($10k Guaranteed) tournament at Pokerstars, where I manage 39 rebuys and am still not able to build a stack. -$120.30. My table loved me, as you can imagine.

Total all that shit up and you have my results for the day. This one will take a mental toll on me, not to the mention the financial toll. June is not exactly going as planned, I am in the hole pretty deep pretty early, I need to concentrate on digging myself out of the hole before I even think about embarking on my $6k goal for the month. I may be taking tomorrow off, I'll decide that in the morning.

Kiel + Hamburg

So Sutti and I drove to Kiel on Friday afternoon to make it in time for the €100+5 NL tournament being held at Casino Kiel. We made it to Kiel on time, checked into our hotel, and quickly headed over to the casino. Sutti unfortunately forgot to bring dress shoes, so he was dressed in a suit with white tennis shoes. The lady at the reception was not going to let her in, until we pleaded with her that we drove all the way from Berlin to be there, so she agreed to let it go by this one time.

At around 8pm we finally got into the casino and headed right up to the "Poker Room", basically the whole upstairs area of the casino. We met CoWhi, who was Floorman of the poker area and responsible for overseeing the tournament and cash games afterwards. He had just been to Vienna to play poker, so we had plenty of things to talk about.

At 8:30, all 23 players were crammed onto two tables (one with 12 players, the other with 11). I was assigned to the table with 12 players. Somehow, ALL other 11 players managed to get their seats right away and so I had to squish myself in between two guys, but I could barely reach the table. Terribly uncomfortable, I was not looking to be playing too many pots early. I would stretch my arms to the table, check my cards, hope that they are bad enough to throw away, then quickly retreat to semi comfortable position behind the other players. 1 player busted and so finally I got to have a normal seat at the table.

We were now in Level II (Blinds 40/80, starting chips 1500) and in LP I was dealt 99. I had not played a single hand up to this point, so I thought my raise would perhaps get some respect. It was folded around to me, and I put in a raise of 200. Both the SB and BB called, and so we saw a flop of 8 6 2. The SB bet 160 (into a 600 pot), which kind of threw me off. What kind of cards would justify that? The BB folded and so I thought for a moment. I put him on a weak ace, perhaps A8. I decided to raise it to 500 and see where I stand. He called rather quickly. The turn comes J and he goes all in. God damn it.

I felt pot committed, and at the same time stupid, as I made the crying call. He showed 88 for the set, the river brought something of no significance and I was sent to the rail in 22nd place. Oops.

The cash game (5/10 Limit) was going to start when only 10 players remained in the tournament and one table freed up. Due to the fast blind structure, that took around 90 more minutes. I got my seat and watched the other buy in with €100 (10 BBs). One guy even tried buying in with €50. Wow. I bought in for €200 and immediately had flashbacks from CCC as these players called every bet presented to them.

We started 7 handed and I was dealt some nice cards, including making 4 aces with my A7o. I had soon built up to €350 and it was looking to be a nice night. The table filled up (10 players) and I continued to run hot. I would estimate the seen-flop % at that table to be somewhere been 65-75%. There were a couple pots that ALL 10 players saw the flop! It wasn't uncommon to have 7-8 players in there preflop, absolutely unbelievable. Showdowns became a comedy show, Q2o vs T8o vs KJo vs some guys's cracked AA. I knew that the best strategy would be to stay tight and hope to avoid bad beats.

CoWhi stepped in as dealer for a bit, which was pretty neat. I continued to build my stack against these calling stations. My KK held up and a few hands later I had A3s on the button. 6 players limped in front of me, and so I elected to limp as well. The flop came 245 and I went cruising. Around 1:30am I called it quits, and when I counted down my stack I had exactly €600, €400 more than what I started with.

The Eagles concert in Hamburg the next day was AWESOME, that was really a once-in-a-lifetime experience for me! Now I'm back in Berlin and it's time to take down the Stars Million tonight. Wish me luck!

Not a great start

Thursday: -$458.80
Well that's not exactly what I had in mind to kick off June. I got my ass handed to me in the $2/4 cash games today, losing over $900 in some quite spectacular hands. If it wasn't for the $105+9 Turbo SNGs at Pokerstars, I would be down well over $1k for the day.

Tomorrow Sutti and I are driving to Kiel, to play in the €100+5 NL Tournament being held at Casino Kiel. They will be offering cash games as well, but unfortunately only Fixed Limit Hold'em. One of our forum members "CoWhi" is the floorman for Casino Kiel's poker section, so it should be a good time meeting him as well.

Then on Saturday, it's just a hop-skip-and-a-jump over to Hamburg, where I have tickets for the Eagles concert in the Colorline Arena. Man, I can not wait for it! The Eagles is by far my favorite band, I reserved the tickets back in December '05! Even writing about this concert gets me excited...it's going to be an amazing time.

May Recap

May Recap:
Total earnings: $4643.79
I am expecting a rakeback payment of around $400, which should bump my total to $5k for the month. The main reason why this result is lower than Jan/Feb/Mar/Apr is due to the fact that I did not log as many hours at the tables. My trip to America took a slight bit off my monthly earnings, but I wouldn't trade the time I had with my family for $100k.

I only have a couple small trips planned in June (including 2 World Cup matches), but it should not take too many days out of my playing schedule. My goal is to make at least $6000 profit in June, not including rakeback or bonuses. I plan on doing this by adding cash games more into my daily routine, I have not yet decided whether I would rather be playing shorthanded or longhanded. I will most likely mix it up a little.

When I review my statistics over the last months, I notice that my hourly rate even at $1/2 NL is significantly higher than my hourly rate at the $55 SNGs. I will begin to phase out the $55 SNGs out of my daily routine, not immediately, but gradually, and see how the month treats me. I'd also like to wish good luck to the readers of my blog for the month of June!

Wednesday: +$409
84 players entered the 10pm $109 MTT at CelebPoker, in which I finished 5th place for $672. I want to win this tournament at least once, if not twice, in June. Add that to my list of goals in June.
