Pot Limit at the Spielbank and April Recap

Sunday: -$45, +€520
I arrived at the Spielbank at 4pm ready for some action. I was Nr. 17 on the waiting list but somehow managed to get a seat due to the fact that many players didn't show up. I recognized three players at the table. One of them was a friend of mine (Rainer) who I play live poker with realtively often. One of them was a guy who I have played with on a few occasions, a very aggressive, solid player. The other guy (we will call him Table Captain, or "TC" for short) was a guy who had something of mine, namely my €500 from a few months back. This guy is a guy who thinks he knows everything, thinks he can tell the players what to do, thinks he can tell the dealers what to do, even thinks he can tell the floormen what to do. Hence the name "Table Captain."

I buy-in with exactly €500. I was quite surprised to see that most people bought in for the minimum of €150. Finally around 4:40pm the first hand is dealt and I look down at AKs. It is folded to me and I immediately say "Pot." One more folder and then Rainer says, "Pot." He puts his whole €200 over the betting line and I have a decision to make. I know Rainer is capable of doing this with a lot of hands and so I decide to call. The board comes down all rags and I was already waiting for Rainer to flip something over like Jacks. To my pleasant surprise, he showed AQo for ace high! I raked in the €405 pot and off we went.

TC was sitting two to my right, which was absolutely perfect for me. A few rounds later I was dealt 44. There was an early raise to €30, TC called (which he does 95% of the time no matter what the bet is) and I called as well. The flop came down As 4s 5h. They both checked it to me and I fired out €60. The original raiser folded and TC called. I knew this was my chance. The turn came 9d. TC checked and I bet out the pot, which was somewhere around €250. He called immediately and I knew deep down that that donkey was chasing his flush draw against all odds. The river came Ah. I had a full house. I was sooooo hoping he had a weak ace as he checked it to me one more time. He only had €120 left, which is the amount that I bet. That donkey folded before I could even get my chips across the line. Nice pot for me.

I lost only one pot to TC, when I held AQo and called his €30 preflop raise. The flop came KQ6 and he checked it to me. I bet €50, he called. Turn came 7. He checked again, I bet €50, he called. River came 2. He checked, as did I, and he showed K9o for top pair. Nice hand, sir.

I was dealt QQ shortly thereafter and took a €120 pot from him. Unfortunately for me, that was the end of my cards. And I mean end. From 5:45-8:45pm, I was dealt not one playable hand. Not even one. No kidding. I lost my blinds every round except for one, when I flopped two pair in my BB. Other than that, it was fold, fold, fold, fold, fold, fold, fold. The table began to get very tight and so I decided that at I would leave around 8:45 in order to get back home for the Celeb League Double Points tourney. I went to the cashier and cashed out €1020, exactly €520 more than what I came with. I'll take that anyday.

The League tourney lasted about 6 hands. The very second hand I lost with AK against KK on a K high flop. I was left with 10 chips, which I lost a few hands later. That realy sucked because now I'll fall even further down the leaderboard.

April Recap:
Total Winnings:
$ 5,847.24
That does not include the $650 rakeback payment I am expecting tomorrow or the $100 loyalty bonus from Celeb. If you factor in those, April was relatively successful for me. May brings news adventures and I am shooting for at least $6k in winnings. I will be in America for one and a half weeks of May so my playing time will be limited. Still, I am quite optimistic as to what success the upcoming month may bring. Thanks to everyone (even if it is only a couple people) who read my blog!

When it rains, it pours

I used to sell furniture at a Big Lots store in Shawnee, Kansas. I had a manager there who used to say, "When it rains, it pours." That quote really struck me, especially when I began to really think about it. It is quite amazing that when you run hot in poker, everything and anything goes right. Every card falls in the right place, every flop is a good flop, and every pot is a good pot. The same goes for losing streaks. Nothing goes right. Cold cards all the time, missed flops, failed bluffs, unbelievable suckouts, etc. Anyway, I thought that might be a good blog title, as it certainly fits to my day.

Friday: +$569.80
Things went very well on Friday. I lost around $200 in cash game play, so if you consider that all my money was made playing SNGs, you can see how my gameplay really paid off. Nothing too spectacular, just the usual grind.

At night, I played the Celeb League tourney along with 16 other players. I came in 3rd place and even came ITM for the first time in a while. This was a good confidence booster going into Sunday's double points tourney.

After that I headed to the Spielbank Berlin with a couple friends. Since poker is only played on Sundays, roulette was the game of choice. I won my very first bet when I bet on 4, 10, and 12. The ball fell right into the '12' slot and I collected my €70 win. I messed around a bit and ended up leaving the casino up €45. I know roulette is definitely a long term non-profitable game, but it's good fun every once in a while.

Saturday: -$216.20
This is the day that justifies the blog title. I started playing in the afternoon, cashing in 6 of my first 8 SNGs. It all looked like today was a direct continuation of yesterday's run. Little did I know, a reality check was right around the corner getting ready to kick my ass. My next 7 SNGs were all good for nothing, costing me over $800 in the process. I tried playing some cash game to break the flow but it didn't help much. Luckily I came in 2nd place in my final $109 SNG which brought me back to a reasonable loss for the day.

Tomorrow is going to be pretty interesting. I signed up for €5/10 Pot Limit Hold'em game at the Spielbank Berlin. Play starts at 4pm and I will put in 4-5 hours before coming home to play the Celeb Double Points Tourney at 10pm. Unless I am running very well, in which case I may consider just staying at the Spielbank. Those of you who have been reading the blog for a while may remember my attempt to beat this game a few months back. Unfortunately I had a horrible run and lost €500 to some of the worst players you have ever met. This time I'm taking 2 x €500 buy-ins as double ammunition in case something goes wrong. The minimum buy-in is €150 (only 15 big blinds) and you would be amazed what kind of fish come there looking make a nice score. My mouth waters just thinking about the game. Wish me luck!

Getting out of the funk

Thursday: +$93
Well I guess that's a step in the right direction. I was busy with work and such all day so I did not get to play too much poker. When I got home at 10:30pm, I started playing some SNGs and it seemed like it picked up right where it left off yesterday. I lost the first 4 in a row before making one 3rd place cash.

In the $215 SNG, I played very well and made it to heads up with even stacks. So far, I lost all three of these when I have made it heads up. I though today might be different, as my opponent began talking a lot of trash. He had me outchipped, then I took a big lead, couldn't finish him off and we were even again. I was then dealt Q7s in my BB. He completed and I checked a flop of QT2, with the intention of a check/raise all in. He checked behind and then turn came T. I checked once again, although it felt like the wrong play. He bet 3200 into a 1600 pot and I immediately pushed, which he immediately called with KT. Oops. River K and I missed the chance to win $1k yet again. The $600 did bring me back into positive numbers for the day, even if it only is $93.

Laughable

Wednesday: -$455.20
Some ridiculous shit went down today and I am still in disbelief. Obviously the cards aren't going to go for you every day, but cards going against you is something different. I almost wanted to puke when I would watch my KK go up into flames against AQ all three times they squared up today. I almost had to puke when I watched myself bubble, and bubble, and bubble, and bubble. I was around $900 in the hole when I stopped playing the SNGs.

At 8pm I joined the $20+2 HU MTT at Pokerstars. 128 players were there total (Sutti as well). I pretty much cruise controlled through my first few heads up matches and got lucky one round when my opponent was sitting out the whole time. When we were down to only four players, amazingly, Sutti was still in as well! Then we were paired against each other. We had decided in advance that we would just pick a hand and go all in, that way there would be no battle. I won the coinflip and was sent to the final! 1st place paid $768, 2nd place paid $480.60. My opponent was weaker than expected I managed to get all my chips in on this hand:

It didn't take me too long to lose to him after this. It's a horrible feeling to be so close to victory only to have the chips ripped away and sent to your opponent's stack. It's much worse than being behind the whole way. At least that $460 took a chunk out of my losses for the day, but it was definitely not enough to cover the wound.

Same old

Monday: +$311
It didn't look like Monday was going to be a good day at all. There was no grey zone, it was either black or white. Win or lose. When the losing happened seven tournies in a row I was beginning to get frustrated. Luckily a couple wins soon followed and I found myself slowly crawling back towards not so bad numbers for the day. I made 4th place in the Celeb League tourney, which I really should have won but I started playing like a donkey. I blew my humungous chiplead and paid the price by bubbling.

At 10:30 then I registered for a $53+5 qualifier to the $250k Guaranteed tournament. 19 players signed up and so there was one seat up for grabs, as well as $477 for second place. After a couple hours I found myself 3-handed and began to take control of the table. I accumulated a very nice chiplead by stealing blinds left and right, which was made possible because the other two were fighting for 2nd place. I eventually was heads up and it didn't take me all too long to win the seat! They are guaranteeing $60k to the winner of the $250k tournament on May 13th, it would be all too sweet to get my hands on that prize.

Tuesday: -$167
I did a lot of folding on Tuesday. I couldn't seem to get anything playable and was getting shortstacked in virtually every tourney I played. Don't get me wrong, I am very comfortable when I am shortstacked. I feel like I know what to do when I am shortstacked, so that's not the issue. The issue is having the feeling of not being able to accumulate chips so many tournaments in a row. I then got the bad end of a few deals and was ready to call it quits for the day down a little more than $500.

I did still have one $215 SNG running at that time, though. Sure enough, I managed to lose half of my chips in a very unnecessary manner early on in the tourney and found myself shortstacked (surprise, surprise) again. I would stay this way until we were 4-handed, where I barely managed to keep my head above water through steals and then managed to sqeeeeeze myself into the money. I then went into aggression mode, caught a couple hands, knocked the medium stack and played heads up with my 6k vs his 14k.

Heads up is another part of the game where I feel very comfortable in. It went back and forth. He started very aggressive, then I doubled up and he became very passive. I had him all with 99 vs his A4, only to see an ace flop. I worked him down to about 2500 chips vs my 17.5k chips when I pushed in with T4. He called with J2. I flopped a 4 and it all seemed over, until the jack fell on the river. OK. It can happen. We were soon even in chips again, and then I made a mistake that cost me the whole tourney. I pushed in the SB with some kind of crap (don't even remember what it was) and he insta called with AQ. He won obviously. I really regret that move (it should have been a call), but hey, we learn from our mistakes. Next time, he's mine.

Rant rant

Saturday: -$123.03
The day started off well and I was up over $300 very quickly. My luck soon changed though and I lost all six of my next SNGs (3 $109s and 3 $55s). My disappointing 11th place finish in the $8k guaranteed tourney could not reverse my results for the day either, although I came close to big money before being shot down.

Sunday: -$12

After cashing in a couple $109 and $215 SNGs I found myself up $500 right off the bat. A non poker player will say: "You should have quit while you're ahead!" Haha. Easier said than done.

On came the Bodog $100k Guaranteed tournament ($109 buy-in) at 22:00 and about 30 mins into it I was forced to make a big laydown with KK on a 3-flush board. I have a feeling that I made the right play, but that crippled my stack tremendously. When the blinds were at 50/100 I had a 1500 stack and was dealt KK in MP. There was one early raiser and I immediately pushed, only to find myself up against AK. It's not only you, selecti, it happens to me, too. The ace on the flop stares me right into my eyes and says "Game over."

Right around that time the Pokerstars Million Guaranteed ($215 buy-in) started up and in one of the first rounds I managed to double up when my AA met someone's KK. It's so painful when that happens. My good stack did not last very long, though. I got involved in a hand where I held 44 and the flop came 235. My opponent made a small bet which I called. Turn came ace. B-I-N-G-O. Time to get the chips in the middle. He bets big, I shove, he calls, I show my straight, he shows his 33 for a set. The poker Gods river him a boat and I now have a mini-stack. It didn't take me long to get all-in shortly thereafter with AK against TT and QQ, which I lost. Boooo.

My hopes are also rapidly fading as far as winning the Celeb League. Today was the Double Points tourney, which is by far the most important one of the week. Here's how I lost my chips to reevioi after being all in preflop. No damn wonder he is at the top of the leaderboard:
As if I hadn't had enough, I played two SNGs to end the night. One was a $215 SNG and the other was a $109 SNG. I played the $109 horribly but managed to last almost an hour before my stupidity got the best of me. In the $215 SNG, however, it was my opponent's stupidity which got the best of me. I guess A5s is a premium now, I guess I missed the news flash. Because when I shove in 2000 worth of chips with 99, I just don't see how he was able to move his mouse and click the 'Call' button with A5s. Guess it was a good call, though, because he was rewarded with a 234 board. Enough ranting. Tomorrow brings a new day.

The grind

Friday: +$410
During one of my first tournaments today I hit a very beautiful straight flush, here's a screenshot:So that was a great start to the day and it ended up just being a long grind over 7 hours of multiple SNGs at a time. I had a few more third place finishes than I would have hoped for. The third place finishes are really crappy somehow. Obviously they beat the hell out of 4th place, but there is no real money in them and I generally feel like I have wasted an opportunity when I finish third. God look at me. I am complaining about winning money. Pathetic.

A couple bubbles but some good news

Thursday: -$162.50
I didn't get to play too much today and so I ended the day down a little money. I'm not too worried about it, though. I got a little unlucky bubbling out of my last three SNGs that I played. I went in with the best hand every time, but unfortunately lost all three. Yeah, cry me a river.

The good news is that I got an email from the U.S. Soccer Federation saying that I was issued a World Cup ticket to the game USA-Czech Republic! I failed my first attempt at getting a ticket and was put on a waiting list, which evidently paid off! Woo hoo!

Life is good

Wednesday: +$929.25
Considering that I invested very little time into play on Wednesday, I am very pleased with the result. The SNGs at Celeb were down so I played cash games for a while and made around $70. I went out then for a few hours and came back pretty late at night, at which point I decided to play some SNGs. Basically I won two $109 SNGs and cashed in a couple $55 SNGs which made a very nice payday for me.

I would like to start posting hand histories here for analysis in the near future, feel free to comment/criticize my play as I would like to get some feedback on certain situations.

Double Update

Monday: -$395.50
I couldn't get much going on Monday and my results reflect that pretty well. I didn't play bad or anything, but as we all know, even the right decisions are sometimes punished by the poker Gods. This was one of those days. No big deal.

Tuesday: +764.32
The day started off bad, but I turned it out around playing a $22 Rebuy tournament at Pokerstars. I played for 4 hours 30 minutes and came out in 9th place for $424. From then on, things started running pretty well and I ended the night winning a $109 SNG, which helped me sleep with no worries.

Snap! Back to reality...

Sunday: -$897
Whoa whoa whoa! I should have taken the day off it seems :(

I bubbled a total of 7 SNGs (4 of them $109, 3 of them $55)!!! I made the money twice today, and both were only third place finishes in $55 SNGs. The Celeb League tourney at night brought me 12th place after my 44 lost to AK. It looked like a good matchup at first, until I watched the king fall on the river. I took my frustration into the Pokerstars Million tournament, which even had an overlay this time, but my AA was no good against QQ, 99, and A5s. By the way, 99 won. And so I find myself scratching my head asking myself what the hell I did wrong. This loss really stings, although I am fortunate to have a big score the night before I guess. Good night.

A late night rally unlike all others

Saturday: +$1999
I experienced it all today. I was so high, then so low, and then so high again. Here's a breakdown of the day:

Early afternoon: After spending over $60 in a $10+Rebuy Turbo Qualifier at Pokerstars, I make the final table and qualify myself for the Sunday Million Guaranteed.
Early evening: I make a decent amount of money playing the SNGs. Several first place finishes. I am playing concentrated and it is paying off.
Evening: I playing the Scottish Weekly at Celeb. Buy-in is $35+3. A few hundred players. After two and a half hours of play there are 20 players left. Top 18 get a ticket to the Scottish Final. Place 19 gets $280. I have an average chipstack. I get dealt JJ and go all-in. Chipleader calls me with A7s. Flop comes clean, turn comes clean, and then ace on the river. Bubble. Fuck!!! I still can not get this out of my head. I know now that I should have folded preflop, because there is no difference in place 1 or place 18. I did not need to play to win, I needed to fold to win.
Night: Extremely pissed off about the Scottish Weekly I really wanted to just turn off my laptop right then and there. Unfortunately I had already started the midnight $50+5 MTT at Celeb. 100 players showed up and after a few hours of disciplined poker (including a heads up match which was basically handed to me), I took down the tourney for $1500. Thank God I can sleep at peace tonight, I don't know what I would have done if I had been stuck thinking about my bubble play all night!

Still Lukewarm

Friday: +$144
There's no reason for me to complain, since I made money today, so I'll just stick to the positive. I played only SNGs and then the League tourney at 10pm. I finished in 6th place, which brought me no money but will bring me some points in the leaderboard. My final hand was a coinflip, me holding A8s, my opponent holding KJo. A jack on the river did the trick for him. Unfortunately I was unable to qualify for the Stars Million today as planned, due to the fact that I only played at Celeb throughout the day. Hopefully tomorrow or latest Sunday morning I can have my ticket secured.

I went back and read some of my past blog entries today. Man, my writing is horrible! I need to start spell/grammar checking these, some of those posts are an embarassment to the English language! From now on these things are getting proofread before I get them online, that's a promise.

Gold Rush

Thursday: +$1007
I could not have asked for a better day. Played 22 SNGs and 1 MTT. I played incredibly aggressive and today it paid off more than it ever has in the past. A combination of great cards, big bets, and bad opponents adds up to a very nice day. I won several of the SNGs I played and I cashed in the midnight $50+5 MTT (9th place for $138).

That makes three days in a row of fantastic results, life seems to easy right now! Tomorrow night is the League tourney and I am very optimistic going into it. I will also hopefully qualify for the Pokerstars Million sometime tomorrow or on Saturday, because that is a tournament I would definitely like to try my luck in this weekend. To the readers of this blog, I'm sorry it is so results-oriented. If I had great poker stories, I would share them. Unfortunately the life of an online poker player is not all that excited, other than the cash that he/she wins! Hopefully I will start to travel around to some live events in the near future, then things might get interesting!

Positive Hump Day Results

Wednesday: +$624
Things ran relatively well today. I stayed out of trouble for the most part and managed to win a few SNGs. If I could have a guarantee that every day would run like this I would be moving to a Carribean island as soon as possible. Unfortunately, as we all know, not all days run like this. I am quite upset that it has turned into a coinflip of whether I have a green number or a red number to write in my blog. I am lacking a certain level of consistency, but that may be due to the fact that I have not been playing as many hours lately. Wow this blog is turning into random thoughts with no real backbone of organization. Sorry!

Starting the week

Monday:
These losing days are getting pretty old pretty fast. Ever since I have built in the super aggressive part to my SNG game things have been getting shaky. I will stay with my tactic, though, because I know that in the long run it pays out. The short run hurts but the long run is what matter anway. -$246 for Monday

Tuesday:
The right moves came at the right time today and I have the money in my account to prove it. Although not everything worked, I felt that I generally kept "in the zone" and stayed concentrated. I made it to several bubbles and really got the best of it. +$743 for Tuesday

Monday, April 10, 2006

Weekend

Saturday:
Like I said, almost no poker. I did squeeze in a few SNGs in the afternoon and came out -$174. Oh well.

Sunday:
I played 4 MTTs of significance at night:
1. Bodog $100k Guaranteed (Buy-in $100+9) - After almost 3 hours of play my QQ ran into KK and I was sent to the rail. I would have been in great position to make some serious money, since we were approaching the bubble.
2. CelebPoker Double Points League Tourney (Buy-in $20+2) - Card dead, I can't even remember what my last hand was. I had big hopes going into the tourney and now I find myself sliding down the leaderboard again!
3. Pokerstars Million Guaranteed (Buy-in $200+15) - 5510 players showed up and I made it to place 1985 after my TT ran into A6s all-in preflop. Lady Luck decided to throw down an ace on the flop and I was out. Nothing I could do.
4. CelebPoker Scottish Weekly (Buy-in $35+3) - After a little over an hour I eventually lost an all-in with AJ vs AK. Thinking about it now I might not have had to push all-in there, but I'm not sure. I will analyze this hand to find out what the correct move was.

Before that I had played some SNGs and so my total for the day is: -$261. Could have been worse. I feel like I played fine. I also feel a big upswing coming, but we all know how easily those feelings can be washed away.

Saturday, April 08, 2006

Choo! Choo!

I'm rolling and it feels great! Started the day not so great after losing a few SNGs. Then I hopped over to cash games and won a couple hundred. Back to the SNGs and I lost 6 in a row which brought me to an all-time low for the day. But I stuck to my gameplan and went on a tear, cashing in 5 of my next 6 SNGs and bringing my profits for the day to +$508.40. That's four winning days in a row!

At the end of the night I played in the Celeb League tourney and came in 4th place. Unfortunatelythe top 3 got paid, but that didn't matter much to me since I was there for the points. And indeed, I collected 8 points and my comeback continues. The important thing, though, is that my name is at the top of the leaderboard in September, not in April.

I will pretty much be taking tomorrow off from poker to run some errands and then go out with some friends at night. You may find me playing an SNG or two during mid-day but that's it! Tomorrow should give me good rest, because then comes Sunday I will be playing the Bodog $100,000 Guaranteed and the Pokerstars Million Guaranteed tourneys!

Friday, April 07, 2006

Short but sweet

Wednesday:
I had a really good poker day. I started it off by qualifying for the Pokerstars Sunday Million Guaranteed tourney. My goal is to make it further than I did last time (which was place 202 I believe). With over 5000 players it will be difficult, but I am optimistic. The SNGs at Celeb ran my way as well and I ended the day with +$756.

Thursday:
I stuck to the SNGs at Celeb and it was a direct continuation of Wednesday. I could have easily made over a thousand dollars today, but the river was not my friend. Still, I managed to get myself into many favorable situations and I made a total of $319. Is this the consistency I have been seeking? Only time will tell...

Monday/Tuesday Combo

Monday, April 3rd:
First agenda for the day was a meeting Sutti and I had with our hired webmaster for the new Poker-Tester.com The meeting went very well, I am very excited about what is going on behind the scenes and I am sure the users of the site will be as well.

As far as poker goes, it was not such a great day. I took some bad beats, most notably in the Celeb Leeague tourney. I got all-in preflop with AA against KK and the poker gods decided to put not only one, but two Kings on the flop giving him Quads to take me out of the tourney.

Later on in a $55 SNG, my AA met up all in against AQ, only to find a flop of QQQ, and Quads took down my Aces yet again! Total for the day: -$147

Tuesday, April 4th:

Our forum finally was back online today, which was a relief, and I'd like to believe that it helped my poker game as well :)

I was able to turn the day into a +$109.65 winner. I played a lot of hours and so the result is not so great, but at least it's a green number. These past couple weeks have been a rollercoaster ride and I can't wait to get back consistency in my game.

April Beginnings

April 1st:
-$352, and that's not an April Fools joke. I played bad and should have stopped instead of making it worse. But hey, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

April 2nd:
+$269.25 and it happened in one of the best ways possible. I came in 3rd place in the Double Points Sunday Tournament for the Celeb League and brought myself up to place 4 in the leaderboard! I still have plenty of work ahead, but finally I was able to make a little run in that damn league. I realize I still have until September to gather points but I would like to be ahead of the pack going into the home stretch. We'll see.

March Recap

Another month has passed, and I was able to meet my goal for today which brings my total earnings for March to over +$5290.26. I also FINALLY had a good run in the Celeb League, coming in 2nd place for $150 and 10 points. I feel great and am starting into April with a very positive attitude.

I put in more hours than I did in January and February, but my hourly rate sunk pretty heavily and I made less money I did in both previous months. However, it was nowhere near a losing month, and for that I am very grateful.

I have not set any April goals, but I'm sure I'll think of some in the next couple days!
